Short Seminars

MSD provides half-day and full day seminars. These seminars are tailored to give an overview to the attendees on various software development-related topics.

bulletObjects In Action

What's the Problem? [E2]

This half-day seminar introduces the necessary techniques and skills required to fully articulate a 'problem'. This, often overlooked, skill is prerequisite to tackling any problem - personal or professional.

At the end of the seminar the student will be able to:

bulletuse appropriate techniques to determine that the right problem is addressed;
bulletuse different formal techniques to capture the attributes of the problem;
bulletuse techniques to perform problem analysis;
bulletdevelop alternative potential solutions;
bulletdocument the problem solving process.

Elements of System Development [E3]

This half-day seminar introduces the necessary techniques and skills required to define a baseline strategy for solving a 'problem' or achieving objectives. Like porblem definition, this, often overlooked. Go to Elements of Systems Development for more details.

Moving to Objects[E3]

This half-day seminar discusses the differences between current (traditional) software development methods and object-oriented development methods. This seminar provides insights of how an organization can move to an object-oriented approach.

Discussion topics include:

bulletwhy we must change the software development approach;
bulletbasic OO concepts and how they relate to current concepts;
bulletdealing with the change managementaspects of introducing new techniques and technologies;
bullettypes of training that are necessary.

Objects in Action [E5]

This half-day seminar provides a quick overview to object-oriented concepts in a practical manner. This overview includes:

bulletthe differences between a 'data-centric' and 'object-centric' view;
bulletadvantages of the object-view;
bulleta demonstration of an implementation of objects (a real working program fragment using Smalltalk).

At the end of the seminar the student will:

bullethave an appreciation for objects and how the OO technique differs from current (traditional) techniques;
bulletunderstand many of the basic concepts of OO techniques.
