Who's Got Whom? I can recall back in 1994 when I was doing some work at a money management firm in San Francisco, a programmer there was terribly excited by the 'Web'. I had heard of the Web and was using the Internet to perform Email and view Newsgroups. I had already addressed the Internet as the 'Net'. It wasn't until I met this gentleman in San Francisco that I was feeling a darkness at the mention of the 'Web'. Instantly, in my minds eye, I saw a Spider web and all of the 'users' trapped as each users' weaknesses and wants were exposed for the spider to torture. Now, even the term 'net' had a new meaning. All of the users caught in a net and unable to ever achieve freedom and privacy. Yet, like everyone, I am seduced by the technology and the hope for a new culture. Yet, I can't help but feel my initial impression, cynical though it may be, has merit. Like to the song of the sirens or the tune of the piper, we follow. Where we end up we are not sure but we go with joy and excitement. Just remember the spider. SGM 1998 -------- Back to Ruminating... |
