I wrote this song in 1977. My wife and I had a fight that,
I believe, started because there had been a lull in our love-making.
At the time, I was writing a lot on the piano. I had a big
old Martha Washington upright with a hugh soundboard. It was
a converted player-piano.
I always wanted Ray Charles to sing this song. Actually,
I went to RPM Productions (Ray Charles' company) when I was
in LA in 1978. I walked into the place and an extremely tall
and beautiful black woman looked at me with disbelief. I was
way underdressed in my T-Shirt, jeans, and sneakers. I explained
that this was a perfect Ray Charles tune. She called someone
upstairs and before long a black man, about seven feet tall,
in a three piece velvet suit with a hugh plumed hat came down
to see me. He accepted the envelope I gave him that contained
a transcription and reel of tape of the song.
In retrospect I'm sure it never made it past the waste basket
on the other side of the door that he walked through.
