Every songwriter has to write at least one "break up" song. This is my contribution to the canon. Like most of these songs it was borne of true and deep feelings and, unfortunately, a really bad situation. The lyrics plainly state the circumstances of the situation so there's no "hidden meaning" or abstraction to wonder about.
As a writing exercise it started with the riff. I found that "down-ness" by detuning my guitar to get the low 'D' for the song, and came up with the walking riff. From there the tune found it's way into the world.
