I Don't Play By The Rules

This song was written around 1985. My wife and I were living on Sacramento Street in San Francisco. I was working for Chevron Corporation in downtown SF where I often walked to stay in shape and to avoid using the bus. At the time I was very much into triathlon training and I used to enjoy running, particularly through the downtown area. During lunch I'd run through the streets imagining that I was invisible and look at the throngs marching.

I also wanted the sense of time to pervade the song. An older recording of this song featured more of a tick-tock sound and beat. This recording was made in 1998 with an updated feel, however, I never did lay down an instrumental track preceding the bridge (I thought a sax would be appropriate).

Lyrically the song reflects how I feel about myself. I never was "one of the boys" and have always been somewhat of a contrarian. These attributes can confound success in business.
